This is a very well relacquered vintage Martin Committee III tenor sax, serial number 178620. The pictures may fool you on this one. It looks rougher than it is, and with the right tools and know-how, it can be properly restored without too much effort.

The serial number dates this horn to 1951, a contemporary of the Selmer SBA. When you put it in that perspective, you realize how good these Martins were at the time. Often called a “The Martin Tenor” for the engraving on the bell, these tenors are often phenomenal players for budget-conscience saxophonists out there. This particular horn looks like it was relacquered a long time ago, but it is about the nicest job you'll find. Except for the slightly brighter color lacquer, you'd never guess it wasn't original, the engraving is that perfect. But it does need some work.

As you can see in the photos, there are a handful of sizeable dents in the bell. Not sure what the player ran into, but they aren't shallow dings. The good news is, because of where they are, they are very easily removed with the right tools. The bell has shifted, but a knowledgeable tech can make it all right during an overhaul. As for the neck, it is original with matching serial number, but the tenon has become separated from the neck and is currently stuck in the horn. It will need to be resoldered. The neck is also currently pulled down.

I think this tenor has a lot of potential and we'd love to restore, but our repair shop is so behind that it would be over a year before we got to it. As such, we've decided to sell it at a super-low price, in the hopes that a player can put the time into it to make it right again. Should be a great horn once restored.
